The Whips present Hawkstock: A funky celebration of local music

The Whips, a Lawrence-based funk band, has skyrocketed to TikTok fame. After getting 3.5 million views on a Fortnite cover — the first video in their “Makin’ It Funky” series — they’ve grown into a national touring band.

But this week, The Whips are honoring their Lawrence roots by presenting Hawkstock, an all-ages mini music festival at The Granada on May 2, to celebrate Stop Day Eve. They’re joining student bands City Hall and Lavender Bride, as well as Wichita-based Rudy Love and the Encore, to groove their way into the hearts of Jayhawks and beyond.

The Whips are working with DIY collectives The Koi Pond and Tollbooth to ensure safety practices during the show. They also want to spread awareness about the Granada’s membership in the SafeBar Alliance, which prevents sexual harassment and assault at drinking establishments by educating staff and providing bystander intervention training.

Tickets are now $10 with a KU student ID, but only while supplies last at door. Tickets are $20 for the general public.
