Putting parking tickets to a good cause: Parking Amnesty Program launches in September

This September, the City of Lawrence Parking Department is activating its Parking Amnesty Program. It will provide a 50% discount on unpaid parking tickets from the downtown area, then half of those funds will be donated to 10 local non-profits, such as Just Food, the Ballard Center, and Salvation Army.

In this episode of The 785, you’ll hear from the Parking Department leaders themselves. They share how the Parking Amnesty Program is just one component of their work to make parking downtown easier, safer, and more community-focused. Fun fact: The New Hampshire St. Parking Garage now has updated lights, signage, and hand-painted city colors on each level!

“The Amnesty initiative has been in the works for quite some time, even before I joined the Parking Department, and the dedication of this team is truly remarkable,” said Lance McCurdy, the City’s parking supervisor.

And here are The 785’s townie tips for parking downtown:

  • Bring a roll of quarters or download the Passport Parking app for mobile-friendly payments.
  • Check out the parking garages at 927 New Hampshire St. and 727 Vermont St., conveniently located near the Arts Center and library, respectively. They offer 2-hour free parking on the street level and 10-hour free parking on the top level.
  • Make use of the 2-hour free lots along New Hampshire and Vermont Streets.
  • And don’t forget, parking is free on Sundays!
