Bundle Up: Watkins Museum of History partners with Ballard Center for winter clothing drive

The Watkins Museum of History seeks to connect history with current issues. This season, that means hosting a winter clothing drive with the Ballard Center in conjunction with its exhibit, “Bundle Up: Battling the Cold in 1850s Kansas.”

Visitors can drop off coats, hats, scarves and other warm clothing in donation barrels located near the Watkins’ main entrance and second floor landing, which will support community members in need. Visitors can also see relics of vintage men’s fashion, curated from the Merchant Tailor Museum in Colorado, and how these garments were adapted to provide warmth before the invention of central heating. The exhibit will run until March 16, and the drive will continue indefinitely based on participation and need.

In this episode, you’ll hear some of the most interesting facts about the exhibit from Will Haynes, PhD, director of engagement and learning at the Watkins, and Nick Detrano, director of communications and outreach at the Ballard Center, about the impact of these donations on our community.
